Traffic Alert Lake Tahoe Highway 89

TAHOE CITY – Work is set to begin next week on a pavement rehabilitation project on State Highway 89 from Tahoe City to Alpine Meadows.

The project consists of grinding down the existing highway and filling it with hot mix asphalt in order to improve the ride for motorists and cyclists and to extend the life of the roadway. The project limits are from a half-mile north of the “Y” intersection with Highway 28 in Tahoe City to just north of Alpine Meadows Road.

Teichert Construction was awarded the construction contract with a bid of $1.28 million. Teichert will be working overnight shifts from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday using one-way traffic controls through the work zone. The contractor is allowed to start work Sunday nights but isn’t scheduled to next week.

Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

The work should be completed by mid-September, but weather or other unforeseen circumstances could extend it.

Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.” The department will issue traffic updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic information, click on Caltrans QuickMap at: quickmap.dot.ca.gov.
