Round Hill Pines put its chairs away on the first of October, and its website already points to May 1, 2027, for the reopening. Up Highway 50, the beach at Zephyr Cove still has a restaurant serving breakfast at 8 a.m., a marina where parking gets cheaper in winter, and a paddlewheeler with sailings booked through New Year's Eve. When the Forest Service published its 2026 winter closure list, it put only two operations around the whole lake under the heading "Open year-round." Zephyr Cove Resort and Campground is one of them.
Four Closures, Spread Across a Month
The East Shore doesn't shut all at once. It closes in steps, and by the time this publishes on October 22, most of the steps are done. Here is the sequence that touches Zephyr Cove most directly, taken from the Forest Service's September 30 release and the resort's own schedule:
- October 1: Round Hill Pines Beach Resort closes for the season.
- October 4: Sunset Beach Bar & Grille at Zephyr Cove Resort serves its last day of the season.
- October 12: The Nevada Beach campground and Nevada Beach itself close, on the same day as Baldwin and Pope beaches.
- November 1: Zephyr Cove Stables closes, the same day as the Camp Richardson Corral.
The Forest Service notes that all of these dates depend on conditions and weather.
A closure here covers less than the word suggests. At Nevada Beach, the agency's current conditions page says foot traffic is welcome all year. What stops is the seasonal camping and parking, along with restrooms and trash service. The release makes the same point for national forest land in general. The land stays open, parking is limited by winter conditions, and visitors pack out everything they bring, pet waste included. So the sand off Elks Point Road is still there in November. It just comes without a parking spur or a restroom.
The Two Names on the Year-Round Line
The release ends with a single line for operations that skip winterizing: Camp Richardson Resort's hotel, cabins and RV campground, and Zephyr Cove Resort and Campground. Every other beach resort, corral, campground and picnic area on the Forest Service list has a closing date. Zephyr Cove doesn't.
You can see the difference on the ground. Zephyr Cove Restaurant stays open all year, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Parking also runs against the usual seasonal pattern. In summer, daily parking at Zephyr Cove Marina costs $12. The resort's maps and parking page says that fee is waived in winter.
Here's what has shifted at the cove itself between peak summer and the coming weeks:
| At Zephyr Cove | Summer 2026 | Late fall into winter |
|---|---|---|
| Resort and campground | Open | Open year-round |
| Zephyr Cove Restaurant | Open | Open year-round, 8 a.m. daily |
| Sunset Beach Bar & Grille | Thursday to Sunday | Closed since October 4 |
| Zephyr Cove Stables | Open | Closes November 1 |
| Marina day parking | $12 per day | Fee waived in winter |
Along the East Shore, most of the Forest Service sites near the cove lose their parking and services by mid-October. The one stretch that keeps a kitchen, a dock and a parking lot running also stops charging for the lot.
A Finished Highway Between Here and Everywhere Else
The drive to reach the cove is changing this month too. For two summers, the Nevada Department of Transportation has been repaving U.S. 50 from the Stateline casino corridor to Spooner Summit. That work included a one-mile stretch from Round Hill to Zephyr Cove that was skipped in the first season and repaved this year.
NDOT's project page now says paving is complete. Crews are still finishing signs, striping and barrier-rail painting and clearing their staging areas. The 35 mph speed limit stays in place through the work zones, and the department expects minimal delays for the rest of the project. When the Tahoe Daily Tribune previewed the season in April, the forecast was completion in October 2026. The schedule has held.
That matters for the off-season calendar below. Most of what happens through December takes place either at the Zephyr Cove Marina or in the Stateline corridor, and the highway between them is now newly paved end to end.
The Dock Calendar, October Through New Year's Eve
The M.S. Dixie II keeps a dated schedule well after the summer crowds leave. Here is what Zephyr Cove Resort lists on its upcoming events calendar:
| Date | Sailing or event | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday, Oct. 22 | Community Day | Free, dockside, 4 to 7 p.m., with refreshments, food and live music |
| Saturday, Oct. 24 | Oktoberfest cruise | Noon to 2:15 p.m. |
| Saturday, Oct. 31 | Halloween daytime cruise | Noon to 2:15 p.m., children free with a paid adult |
| Saturday, Oct. 31 | Halloween costume dinner cruise | 5 to 8 p.m. |
| Wednesday, Nov. 11 | Veterans Day cruise | Noon, free for veterans and active military; guest tickets $109 |
| Thursday, Nov. 26 | Thanksgiving dinner cruise | Three hours, departing 4 p.m. |
| Dec. 19 | Santa Cruise | Listed for noon |
| Thursday, Dec. 31 | New Year's Eve dinner cruise | 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., welcoming 2027 |
Community Day falls on the afternoon this post goes up. It's the one entry on the list that costs nothing and requires no ticket, since it happens at the dock rather than on the water.
For Thanksgiving, the resort offers a second option on land. Zephyr Cove Restaurant is serving a Thanksgiving meal on November 26 for $55 per person. That puts the holiday dinner cruise and the restaurant table on the same property, the same afternoon.
The resort runs the Dixie II's day-to-day sailings from a live booking calendar on its cruise schedule page, so that page has the current times for any date outside the holiday list.
Where the Season Hands Off to Winter
Late November is when Zephyr Cove's year-round status starts to connect with the winter season around it. Heavenly lists November 20 as opening day on its official site, and the Tahoe Daily Tribune's September 25 winter preview printed the same date. Earlier coverage in the Tribune noted that opening dates depend on conditions. Heavenly's part of that preview mentions upgraded food offerings and planned DJ performances.
Snowmobiling at the cove has a booking deadline but no opening date yet. Zephyr Cove offers a 20 percent discount on snowmobile tours booked in advance through December 9. Its tour schedule page relies on an availability calendar rather than a fixed start date, and the operator's FAQ says tours can be canceled for snow, weather or other conditions.
A few miles south, the Stateline corridor fills the evenings the summer beaches used to cover:
- Tahoe Terror at Bally's Lake Tahoe, a new haunted house, opened October 2 for Friday and Saturday nights through October, and the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported it planned to stay open until 3 a.m. on Halloween night.
- Tahoe Knight Monsters games at Tahoe Blue Event Center are scheduled for October 23, 24, 25, 28, 30 and 31, then November 19, 20, 21, 25, 27 and 28.
- Heavenly Holidays in Heavenly Village starts November 27 and runs daily through December 31. According to the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority listing, the 65-foot tree lighting is free, with daily 5:30 p.m. lightings through Christmas.
